  3. LIMITED DURATION SPACE ENVIRONMENT CANDIDATE MATERIALS EXPOSURE (LDCE)
  4.  
  5.      The primary objective of the Limited Duration Space Environment 
  6. Candidate Material Exposure (LDCE) is to introduce development 
  7. composite materials to a flux atomic oxygen atoms in low-Earth orbit.  
  8. The candidate materials-polymeric, coated polymeric, and light 
  9. metallic composites will have undergone extensive ground based 
  10. material performance testing prior to being attached to reusable test 
  11. fixtures designed for multi-mission Space Shuttle use.

  13.      The LDCE, configuration C, consists of two standard 5-cubic-foot 
  14. GAS cans with Motorized Door Assemblies (MDA's).  A crewmember uses 
  15. the Autonomous Payload Control System to control the payload from the 
  16. aft flight deck.  The LDCE is a simple exposure experiment that 
  17. utilizes an MDA on each can but does not contain any batteries or 
  18. fluids.
